What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns can be thought of as protective “caps” used for individual teeth. Depending on the patient’s case, we may use crowns in several ways:
- Protect teeth that are weakened by trauma or decay
- Reinforce teeth that have undergone root canals
- Cover severely discolored or misshapen teeth
- Restore chipped or broken teeth
- Hold dental bridges in place
- Cover dental implants
Types of Dental Crowns
We use various materials for our dental crowns to suit the individual needs and preferences of each patient:
We selectively use these crowns because their appearance tends to clash with natural teeth, but some cases may require their impressive durability. Out-of-sight molars, for instance, might be excellent candidates for metal crowns.
We use these two materials most often because they are durable, stain-resistant, and natural-looking. They’re also an excellent option for patients who have metal allergies.
This option combines metal and ceramic or porcelain to strike a balance between aesthetic appeal and durability. These crowns are suitable for front or back teeth and longer bridges where metal might be necessary for support.
Feel free to contact us if you want to find out what type of crown best suits your case.
At Oro Valley Dental Group, we strive to go above and beyond each patient’s expectations with a beautiful dental crown that will last a long time. We can break down our general procedure into these four steps:
1. Initial Preparation
Before anything else, we first assess the condition of the tooth. Our dentists will clean the tooth and – in some cases – file it down or apply fillings to prepare it for a crown.
Then we take an impression of the tooth and use it as a blueprint to develop the crown’s shape. We go through this phase with great care to ensure that the resulting crown is stable and comfortable.
2. Temporary Crown Placement
We protect the prepared tooth with a temporary crown during the client’s first appointment while we fabricate the permanent crown. For some cases, this may not be necessary.
3. Crown Fabrication
This phase takes a few days to accomplish. If the patient selects a porcelain material for the crown, we will choose a shade that closely matches the color of the patient’s teeth.
4. Permanent Tooth Crown Placement
During the patient’s second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and check the permanent crown’s fit and general appearance. Once the patient is satisfied, our dentists will secure it in place with adhesive. In need of dental bridges? Learn more about our dental bridges.
