What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant acts as a replacement for the roots of a missing tooth and acts as the base to outfit a prosthetic tooth. Aside from their obvious cosmetic benefits, dental implants have a much larger role to play when it comes to dental health.

Missing teeth can hasten bone loss and cause gum shrinkage. Any surrounding teeth can also shift into the empty space and weaken, which increases the patient’s risk of developing other dental issues.

We use titanium as the material for our implants – not only because it is durable but also because it has a  unique ability to fuse with bone. These implements help stabilize the patient’s jaw and stimulate bone growth to prevent rapid bone loss caused by missing teeth.

The Advantages of Dental Implants

Even though the cost of dental implants is slightly higher than the cost of traditional dentures, many patients still choose this treatment for several reasons:

  • Dental implants are stable and don’t affect the way you speak or eat
  • Dental implants work well for replacing one tooth or multiple teeth
  • Dental implants last a lifetime with proper maintenance
  • Dental implants don’t affect adjacent teeth
  • Dental implants preserve the patient’s jaw bone

Our Process

1.    Titanium Post Placement

We use X-rays and other digital imaging techniques to locate the optimal spot for the implant. Our team of professionals will then surgically attach the titanium post to the jawbone. The surgery typically takes no more than an hour, and the patient typically may experience only minimal swelling and tenderness after the procedure.

2.    Healing Period

We need to wait for the jaw and the post to fuse together before we can begin replacing missing teeth, and the healing period can vary from person to person. For some cases, it can take several months before the jaw and the post fuse completely, while other patients may be ready for their teeth implants in just a few days.

3.    Teeth or Tooth Implant Placement

We have different types of dental implants in Tucson, AZ, to match every patient’s need. If a patient has one missing tooth, we use a dental implant crown that blends perfectly with the rest of the teeth. If the patient has two or more adjacent teeth missing, we create unique implants supported by dental bridges.

Both of these options involve attaching the replacement teeth to the titanium implants that have fused with the jawbone.
